Supporting research in universities
Sight Research UK does not carry out research directly, but it provides important added value to its donors by ensuring that all our research funding has been awarded fairly, transparently, and has been rigorously assessed by independent global experts.
As a charity, we are fully independent from government and are funded only through donations from the public. Our charitable purpose is to channel our donors’ generosity to support research that is poised to provide as much benefit to patients, as soon as possible.
The grants we award to university based researchers only ever cover the direct costs of each project. This means that we never use our donors’ money to cover universities’ overheads costs.
However, as members of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC), our grants help to unlock additional funding from the government through the Charity Research Support Fund (CRSF).
Through the CRSF in England, the government adds up to 19p to every charity pound invested in research in universities. This does not include the equivalent support that exists in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
This is important because keeping up with the cost of cutting edge research facilities is crucial to maintaining the highest possible standards of research. Therefore, Sight Research UK fully supports the AMRC’s statement on supporting research in universities.
