Sisters Mickey and Kerri are two of our Big Half runners who is running to raise money for sight-saving research this September.
Mickey and Kerri’s story:
“Sight Research UK funds groundbreaking research into conditions like glaucoma, AMD, and diabetic retinopathy – conditions that sit very close to home for our family. We’ve seen how precious vision is, how fragile it can be, and how urgently better treatments and earlier diagnoses are needed.
So, we’re running for everyone whose world has been blurred, darkened or threatened by sight loss – and for the incredible scientists working to protect one of our most important senses.
In our family, we have a history of short-sightedness, cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.”
Mickey is mum of one, an English teacher, and loves a good musical and Kerri works at Sight Research UK and, in her spare time, does axe-throwing and volunteers as a trustee for her local Citizens’ Advice.
Every 6 minutes a person in the UK will be told they will lose their sight. That's 0 lives changed today so far.Another in 6m 00sWhat’s your running experience?
“We are not natural runners. We do not enjoy running and are already counting down to the day when we can hang up our running shoes in retirement. Our main focus is just being able to make it around. We are hoping that there will be added benefits from this challenge – more time outside, improved fitness, and just feeling great when we celebrate with a glass of wine or two.”
Why The Big Half?
Kerri – “[I work] for the charity and (as she will put it) dragged Mickey into this. But I do remember her being very excited and saying she wanted to get involved and help support the charity.”
