Georgina is one of our Big Half runners who is taking on the challenge of a half marathon to raise money for sight-saving research this September.
By joining #TeamSightResearchUK, Georgina is helping to fund pioneering research into eye disease, sight loss and potential future treatments. Every mile she runs and every pound she raises will help support research that aims to improve the lives of people affected by vision impairment across the UK and beyond. As someone who works closely with patients benefiting from eye care, Georgina understands the life-changing impact that protecting and restoring sight can have. Taking part in The Big Half is her opportunity to turn that understanding into action by raising awareness and vital funds for sight-saving research.
Georgina’s story:
“I’m running for Sight Research because of my role at Newmedica, where I get to see just how much of a difference eye surgery can make to people’s lives. It’s something that’s really stayed with me and made me want to get involved beyond work. This feels like a good way to give something back and support the kind of research that helps change lives.”
“I enjoy hiking on weekends with my boyfriend and exploring new places, and I’m always looking forward to my next holiday. I love reading, spending time with friends and family, and I also enjoy watching my local football team. Recently, I’ve been trying to improve my cooking skills too which is still a work in progress!”
Every 6 minutes a person in the UK will be told they will lose their sight. That's 0 lives changed today so far.Another in 6m 00sWhat’s your running experience?
“I only started running last year and have mainly stuck to 5Ks, so this feels like a big step up for me. It’s pushing me out of my comfort zone, and something I’ve never tried before, which is exciting but also a bit nerve-wracking!”
Why The Big Half?
“I wanted to set myself a challenge and the Big Half felt like the right one to go for. It also takes place on 6th September, which will be 13 years since I lost my dad, so it felt like a meaningful day to do something positive and push myself.”
Like many first-time half marathon runners, Georgina has spent months building up her distance, confidence and endurance ahead of race day. With each training run, she’s moving one step closer to the starting line while helping to raise awareness of the importance of eye research. By supporting Georgina’s fundraising, you’re helping Sight Research UK continue funding innovative research projects that could lead to new discoveries, treatments and improved outcomes for people living with sight-threatening conditions. Every donation, no matter the size, helps bring us closer to a future where fewer people experience sight loss.
